Jewelry Box
(Never Fabricated Due To COVID-19)
Empathy Interview
The first step of this project was conducting an empathy interview. My client was my younger sister since my mom already has a jewelry box and my sister does not. These are the results from the interview.
Define
The second step of this project is Define. Some key features that I would like to include are external design and functionality. This means I would like the jewelry box to hold all of the types of jewelry requested. I think my biggest challenge in this project is doing exterior design and not taking away from the Scandinavian style.
Ideate
The third step is Ideate. I created an orthographic sketch displaying the exterior dimensions of my jewelry box. The initial drawing is quite plain because from the outside it is just a box.
Tutorial
To help us with this project, Mr. Kinnear developed a Rhinoceros tutorial to help us with our CAD. We needed to make part of the box set up for one drawer to fit in. We also needed to put a support for the drawer with slots on the sides.
Prototype
The next stage is Prototype. I needed to create a basic CAD of my jewelry box with holes for the drawers and support so the drawers would not fall. I raised the bottom of my box to support the drawer. If I make the box, I will just put another piece of quarter inch wood and another piece of eighth inch wood because the difference is roughly 0.3. We also did a tutorial for the side compartment and lid on our tutorial box.
Tutorial Continued
In this stage of the tutorial, we learned different ways of designing handles and hinges.
Prototype Continued
This is my closed box in the second stage of Prototype.
Prototype Continued
This is my open box in the second stage of Prototype. The second picture shows the organized compartments removed, showing visibility of the large compartment hidden underneath.
Final
This is the final stage of my box. It has drawers, organized compartments, side compartments, hangers, lid, and hinges. On the left is my final box, made of quarter inch African teak. The hinges are copper and the hooks are plastic.
