Wooden Mallet

Mallet Safety Project

(Safety Level Yellow Requirement)

In this project I learned how to make a mallet out of ply wood. This mallet is a very useful tool for pounding objects and not leaving marks, unlike metal tools. This mallet is also very environmentally friendly and I did not pollute the air with any waste during this project.

Fabrication Process

In this project I used the water jet, file, sandpaper, hand saw, mitre box, chop saw, table router (flush trim bit), drill press, and the belt sander. On one side of the mallet I could choose the design, and on the other, I was required to represent a Sustainable Development Goal. My mallet represents Goal 5, Gender Equality, and also has my robotics team number on the other side. To create the design, I drew it in Rhinoceros and then used the laser cutter to raster the pattern onto the wood.

How this project relates to an Sustainable Development Goal

This project relates to Goal 12, Responsible Consumption and Production, because I was conscious of materials that other people could use from the waste of my materials. The mallet templates were cut very close together to reduce wasted wood. Every person in the class made one mallet for themselves so there were no extras that were produced.
